The Professor Jan Strzałko Award for outstanding young scientist

The award was established on September 29, 2016 at the General Assembly of the PTNCE as a commemoration of Professor Jan Strzałko – scholar and academic at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, authority in biological anthropology, mechanisms of evolution, human anatomy and physiology, and human ecology in the Faculty of Biology, author of numerous publications and entries in encyclopedias and dictionaries, editor and co-author of textbooks, long-time Editor-in-Chief (1986–2011) of the journal Anthropological Review, member of the PTNCE merited in "vocation to life" of the Society, and key figure in Polish anthropology.

Award Regulations

The Professor Jan Strzałko Award is given by the Polish Society for Human and Evolution Studies (PTNCE) to a young scientist who holds the PhD degree in recognition of outstanding publishing achievement. Publications submitted for the award must include an aspect of evolutionary research on human and be original and innovative. Candidates for the award may be a PTNCE member of up to 35 years of age (at the time of application), or in receipt of a PhD degree for no longer than 5 years. In the case of women with children, the candidate maximum age is extended by an additional 6 months per child.

A candidate can self-submit the application or be nominated by an independent professorial researcher. In the latter case, along with the necessary documentation, a written justification for the recommendation and the consent of the recommended candidate are required in addition.

Required documents:

  • A concise CV of the candidate, along with: a photo, birthdate, date of award of PhD, date/year of joining PTNCE, educational background, academic and research experience (scholarships, grants), as well as candidate's h-index.

  • List of 10 major publications (candidates for the Award should be the first authors of at least half of the submitted publications), along with journal impact factors and the contribution of the candidate [%] to the scientific achievement (publication).

  • PDF's of five articles published in reputable journals from the last 5 years (please name the files with the concise title of the article and the date of publication).

Applications should be sent to the President of the Award Committee along with a copy to the official PTNCE address (kaszycka@amu.edu.pl, ptnce@ptnce.pl) between October 1–31 each year.

The laureate of the Professor Jan Strzałko Award will be selected by the Award Committee by means of competition. The Committee is appointed by the Society Board for the duration of the term of office of the Board, and consists of five members - persons from within and outwith the Board. One of the members of the Committee is elected as a President.

A solemn announcement of the name of the Laureate and presentation of the Professor Jan Strzałko Award takes place in the general forum of the annual PTNCE conference in September of the following year. As a Prize, the winner receives:

  • An invitation to deliver a special half-hour lecture, during which the laureate will present an account of his/her scientific achievements;

  • A gift voucher worth 100 euros;

  • Exemption from registration fee for the conference at which the prize is awarded;

  • Waiver of PTNCE membership fee payment for two consecutive years;

  • A diploma of recognition.

The Award Committee may choose not to select a winner in a given year.
